Your host John Davidson
I’m a local boy, I grew up in Hastings, and I’ve had a lifetime love of gardening. I guess you will see that when you look around our lovely property!
When we bought this land in 2000 we had a vision to create something special we could share with others.
Back then, it was pretty much an empty paddock surrounded by an old orchard.
Our aim was to create a boutique lodge where our guests could relax, rebuild their strength, or just chill out in a quite unique environment. A place where being peaceful and close to nature are the driving ideas. A place where all our guests could find privacy and space.
In designing the gardens and buildings we focused on low impact and sustainability. The plantings are a deliberate mix of natives and exotics to blend with the environment as much as highlight the unique seasonal character of Hawke’s Bay.
We also wanted to create an environment that drew back the bird life that was absent when we arrived. We now see bellbirds (Korimako), wax eyes (Tauhou), fantails (Piwakawaka), grey warblers (Riroriro), kingfishers (Kotare), Californian quail, finches, native owls (Ruru), Tui in abundance, and many other birds that haven’t been seen around here for years. The pond has brought in frogs and ducks of various types that often breed here.
Having a passion for all things Kiwi, and especially for all things Hawke’s Bay, we sought furniture and art created by New Zealand and local craftsmen & artists.
We encourage our guests to explore the best the Bay has on offer and have free bikes for them to ride the wonderful iWay.
Although our guests are often couples treating themselves to a little luxury break, people also use St Andrews Escape for intimate gatherings or as a place to stay for out of town wedding guests.
And that leaves me to thank you for reading and welcome you to check out our blog posts.
